What is a flatbed trailer?
Due to the various shapes and sizes of goods, it is sometimes necessary to adopt special methods to transport the goods to the destination. If it is heavy, wide, overweight or oversized, it needs to be transported within the range that a standard enclosed freight trailer cannot accommodate.
This is where the flatbed is transported. As the name suggests, a flatbed truck or trailer is a flatbed truck without a platform or side, and can load and unload cargo from the top, side or rear.
Types of flatbed trailers
There are several types of flatbed trailers, each of which has unique dimensions and can hold almost any size and type of cargo. Due to the weight, height and width restrictions imposed by the government related to transportation, it is important to know which equipment is best for your load-otherwise, you may face inconvenience and cost due to oversize or overweight .
Let's take a look at some of the most commonly used flatbed transportation vehicles, the types of freight that are usually hauled, and tips to ensure that the carrier has the information needed to ensure a successful flatbed transportation.
Standard flatbed trailer
Because of its wide range of uses, the standard flatbed trailer is the most commonly used and may be the one you are most familiar with. These trailers are usually 48' or 53', and the maximum size of cargo that can be transported is 48'x 8'6” x 8'6” (lwh) or 53'x 8'6” x 8'6” (lwh). The maximum load capacity is 48,000 pounds.
The loading height of a standard flatbed trailer is usually 58 inches and is used for cargo that requires top, side or rear loading.
Ordinary freight with standard flatbed trailers:
Steel products; Wood products; Construction Equipment; Large industrial pipe; mechanical; Single deck trailer (Stepdeck)
When you need to transport goods from 8 feet 6 inches to 10 feet high, stepped trailers are an alternative to standard flatbed trucks.
Like flatbed trucks, this type of trailer is usually 48 feet long, but it has raised steps and lowered decks so that taller cargo can be transported without special permits. The maximum merchandise weight of this type of trailer is 48,000 lbs. The maximum freight size of the upper deck is 11'x 8'6” x 9'(lwh), and the maximum freight size on the upper deck is 37'x 8'6” x 10" (lwh) lower deck.
Ordinary freight with stepped trailers:
Farm equipment; Large construction equipment; Large electrical equipment; Bulky product; Double drop low trailer
The double drop trailer is sometimes called Lowboy. Like a single-put trailer, it is basically a flatbed truck, and the modified lower deck can legally transport higher cargo-up to 12 feet.
